Footprints in the Fog: Red Skies Mourning’s ‘Myosotis’ Leaves a Lasting Impression

Sometimes music sounds like déjà vu, like a place you’ve visited in a dream, only to wake up and forget the details, leaving you with an aftertaste—a sense that something out there understands you more than you understand yourself. “Myosotis,” the latest album from Red Skies Mourning, wrestles with this feeling, like unpacking a suitcase filled with other people’s memories and wishing you’d brought your own.

Chris Aleshire, the group’s unmistakable voice, navigates this album with a rawness that’s deeply conversational, yet somehow distant, like someone recounting their life under a streetlamp at 3 AM. Alongside producer CESAR and co-writer Ryan Curtis, Aleshire doesn’t tell you how to feel so much as hand you the pieces and lets you construct the picture.

The themes here—life’s unpredictability, fractured relationships, turning a personal corner—are as old as time yet dressed in fresh, atmospheric soundscapes. It’s all tied together, not with a neat bow, but more like a knotted string unraveling as the songs progress. The blend of alt-rock pop and commercial hooks feels like wandering through Baltimore’s streets with your headphones on shuffle, never knowing what genre or mood will hit next. There’s something cinematic but unpretentiously so, like flipping through an arthouse film and a blockbuster in quick succession.

“Myosotis,” named after the forget-me-not flower, feels like footprints in wet cement. It hardens and weathers. But what will stand? It’s that incredibly human desire to process the ephemeral. Aleshire and crew speak about relationships, but really? They’re asking more than they’re saying.

And really, don’t we all just want to ask the right questions?
