What Strange Beasts is a quartet formed in 2016 by Aaron Kremer (Bass, Vocals), Jonathan Maxwell (Drums, Vocals), Benjamin Ruby (Keys, Vocals), and Alley C (Guitar). After meeting at a performance at Benaroya Hall in Seattle, they began to jam together, producing their first album, “The Maestro’s Tale.”
Reflecting on their own experiences during the global pandemic, their second album, Starlight’s Castaways, will be released soon and it explores themes of distance, isolation, loss, hope, and joy. Temporally enormous as a double LP, the album reflects on the cosmic enormity of the distance. The group brings together a mix of different styles and tastes to create layered harmonies and mesmerizing instrumentations throughout each track.
What Strange Beasts’ “Cat’s Paw” the lead single from their upcoming album is an anthemic hard rock song with a hint of psychedelic influence. From the opening seconds, the song is full of chaos and excitement, provided by the distinct drums and electric guitar. The flow of the lyrics superbly matches the pace of the music, as the singer manages to maintain a steady delivery throughout the song. The chorus stands out as particularly catchy, and it is easy to imagine oneself singing it along with the band.
The different sections of the song blend together seamlessly, with a natural transition from the verses to the solo of the electric guitars. The instrumentation is excellent, with each of the instruments playing a crucial part in the song. The drums in particular provide the underlying beat that drives the rest of the song and works in harmony.
Overall, What Strange Beasts have created a great rock song that successfully manages to combine psychedelia, hard rock, and anthemic choruses. The combination creates an exciting piece of music that is sure to keep listeners coming back for more.
